Reading and learning to write compelling literary fiction is often mysterious, confounding, complex, magical. What makes great fiction great? Why? What can the best fiction teach us about the craft and art of writing beautiful, important, and wise narratives? And as writers how do we implement these lessons to make our own work really sing?
In this workshop on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., we will be reading and breaking down a handful of short stories and novel excerpts with a keen eye toward what makes them exceptional, and how as fiction writers we can work to accomplish this, too.
We will look at techniques of writing memorable characters, vivid setting, dialogue, plot, meaningful scenes, effective and heartfelt point of view.
After studying the published stories, we will hop into our own writing, taking part in exercises and prompts inspired by the work we have read and examined. Then students will get the opportunity to share, workshop and get feedback on the writing that comes out of the prompts.
As well, all workshop participants are invited to read their original short fiction at the Storyfort/Silver Creek Writers Residency Prefort Party open mic the afternoon and evening following the workshop.
Upon sign up each workshop participant will receive a packet of the published work we will be reading and examining leading up to, and during, the workshop. For more information about Christian Winn, visit christianwinn.com.
