The leads in the Ugly Duckling are, Sophia Schoen as the Ugly Duckling, Emelia Morgan/Mother Duck. There are 170 talented young dancers who will grace the stage for this production.
The one-act tale based on Hans Christen Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling” will feature Sophia Schoen discovering her way at the castle pond and realizing that she is not a duck but a beautiful swan. The two-act ballet, “Swan Lake” will star Malila Freeman as Odette-The Swan Queen, Lemuel Reagan as Prince Siegfried, Taylor Telford as Sorceress Van Rothbart, Anika Lyon as Odile-The Black Swan. We produced this show in 1999 with an outstanding cast and this year we have strong talented dancers ready to tackle the challenging classic ballet once again. The music by Tchaikovsky was composed in 1876 and ballet performed in Moscow, Russia in 1877. “Swan Lake” is considered by many the foundation of classic ballet, by integrating the libretto, dance and music into a organic whole. The music was considered very complex for ballet at that time. The entrance of the swans is one of the most beautiful “corps de ballet” pieces that a ballet company produces and the soloist roles of Odette and Odile a pinnacle in a ballerinas’ career.
Footlight in its 34th year, brings programs to children ages’ 4-high school throughout the year at their main studio located in the Community Campus, Hailey with satellite studios at Studio Move in Ketchum, and the Grange Hall, Hailey. All tickets are $ 6.00 and available in advance at Iconoclast Bookstore, Hailey and at the Footlight Studio at the Community Campus, Hailey. Pre-sold tickets are encouraged. The Swan Lake acts present classical ballet/pointe, based on the original choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. This choreography has been restaged by Hilarie Neely, with help from Sherry Horton for the traditional “4 baby swans”. Choreography by instructors Christina Arpp, Julie Fox, Melodie Taylor-Mauldin, Michele Minailo, Hilarie Neely, Jen Simpson, Leah Taylor, Anne Winton and guest choreographer Jaime Moore will entertain the audience with this integrated production.
The second half our our program, Swan Lake finds on the eve of Prince Siegfried’s twenty-first birthday and his Queen Mother giving a party in his honor so he can choose a bride. The Prince would rather be hunting when he sees a flock of wild swans overhead. After searching “through the night, under moonlight”, the Prince suddenly comes upon a lake and witnesses the swans turning into young maidens. He swears his love for Odette, the Queen of the Swans, which will break the spell set by Sorceress Von Rothbart. Siegfried tells Odette to come to the ball the next evening. At the ball the next night, courtiers and princesses’ try to win the Princes’ heart. He is not interested in any of the maidens until Von Rothbart brings his daughter Odile, disquised as Odette. The Prince is fooled, swears love for Odile only to discover Odette is outside. He flees the ball, returns to the lake and asks for Odette’s forgiveness. Banishing Rothbart, they live happily ever after.
